killer babies

you should know by now that i am not a science fiction fan - all of those flying dragons and fire-breathing princesses, it's too much for me. i do, however, like ray bradbury ("dandelion wine" = best book ever). this morning i found myself engrossed in "the vintage bradbury," a book of short stories that i have read several times, but always enjoy rereading. in fact, it almost caused me to be late for work because i could not stop reading.
a brief background on my commute: i live in uptown, so to get to my office in river west i take the red line to the bus or transfer to the blue line. this morning i decided to stay on the train since it was raining, and i almost missed my stop at washington since i was so wrapped up in "the small assassin," a short story about a killer baby.
yikes! killer babies. i remember the first time i read that story i threw the book across the room because i was so thorougly freaked out. it is quite possibly the single most frighteningly good story i have ever read. check out this opening sentence:
"Just when the idea occurred to her that she was being murdered she could not tell."
if that doesn't give you the willies, nothing will.
